WE RISE Poughkeepsie
Description
Exhibits and Events in Poughkeepsie, NY to Celebrate the Centennial of Women’s Right to Vote.
Sept 4 – Sept 19, 2020
WE RISE Poughkeepsie is a collaboration of city art galleries, organizations, artists, and activists to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which gave women in the United States the right to vote. This centennial offers an opportunity to commemorate a milestone in our democracy and to examine and celebrate the power of the vote and of raising our voices in this election year. All the events and exhibits are in downtown Poughkeepsie, NY. The events are from Sept 4 to Sept 19; exhibit dates vary by venue. In response to evolving local health and business guidelines, some IN-PERSON events may become virtual or hybrid. Please check the WE RISE Poughkeepsie FaceBook page for updates.
Art exhibits, movie screenings, performances, panel discussions, lectures, trivia night, and surprise events are planned. These will explore the intertwined and often fraught relationships among the women’s suffrage movement, abolition, and black voting rights. Events include talks with contemporary female artists about how they are using their voices in the context of community and power. There will be something for everyone, so mark your calendars and join us in person or virtually.
Events include an enactment of Sojourner Truth talking about women’s suffrage from a black woman’s perspective; a panel of women artists in various media discussing their practice, careers, and art in the context of community and power; a talk on Ballots & Palettes: Local Women’s Path to Equality in Politics & Art Over a Century Ago; a presentation by Vassar College Professor Miriam Cohen on the women’s suffrage movement, looking at its beginnings on Vassar campus, its connections to other movements, its factions, and its sometimes-troubling history; a discussion about the contemporary art world through the eyes of its female curators and artists.
There will also be a Trivia Night focused on the theme of women’s history and suffrage; a Movie Night about Women artists; an avant-garde film night showing independent films made by and about women organized by Vassar College students; and a parade in downtown Poughkeepsie to celebrate and raise awareness of the historical moment that granted the right and duty of voting.
